The movie was inspired by the Andy Weir novel, who also wrote Project Artemis and Project Hail Mary (pretty good books to read between two movie watching sessions). The story begins in 2035 on the vast planet Mars, where 4 astronauts and scientists explore the land of Acidalia Planitia for the sake of the Ares III mission.

However, on the 18th day, a huge dust storm takes them by surprise and the crew lifts off the planet, leaving their botanist, Mark Watney, on the ground of the Red planet.

The movie displays how Mark manages to survive on this deserted land in order to survive and find a way to go back home.

We can ask ourselves : he’s he truly doomed and alone in this madness, or is there something he could do to contact the Earth and be rescued by NASA ? This is how Mark’s race against time begins. In the whole movie, the protagonist talks to us like in a logbook, blending his simple sense of humour to science facts and his ominous fate.

It feels as if we were here with him, witnessing him.... »
