A.
According to the World Resources Institute, global greenhouse
emissions grew by 51% from 1990 to 2021 causing the planet to warm
at an alarming rate and an increase in natural disasters.
B.
Many of these emissions are caused by high-emission industries
(relying on fossil fuels, releasing big amounts of carbon dioxide and
methane into the atmosphere) with little to limited regulation.
Without
facing financial consequences, these industries have little to no reason
to change their politics and therefore their carbon footprint.
C.
As a consequence, mandatory carbon-based taxes need to be
implemented among high-emission industries in order to reduce the
global carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions.
II.

A.
To begin with, implementing carbon-based taxes will encourage
industries to reduce their carbon footprint.

According to the United Nations in the Causes and Effects of
Climate Change, 75% of global green house gas emissions and
90% of carbon dioxide emissions are caused by fossil fuels
making the fossil fuel a target concerning the decrease of
greenhouse gas emissions.

By implementing taxes based on carbon emission, high emission
industries such as the fossil fuel industry will likely switch to
cleaner sources of energy such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric
power.
B.
Moreover, the money provided by the high carbon emission taxes
could be reinvested by the government.

For instance, the money provided by the taxes collected from
high carbon emission sectors could be reinvested into research
and development of sustainable energies.
2.
Already implemented in some countries including Sweden (one
of the highest carbon taxes in the World) where projects such as
HYBRIT aims coal coke with “green hydrogen”.
