Definition and symptoms ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It is a rare but very serious neurodegenerative disease.

That means it gradually damages the nervous system, especially the motor neurons, which are the nerve cells that control voluntary muscles. When these motor neurons die, the brain can no longer send signals to the muscles.

At the beginning, a person may feel muscle weakness, cramps, or small twitches in the arms or legs.

Over time, the weakness spreads to other parts of the body, including the muscles that control speech, swallowing, and breathing. 2.

Progression and impact The disease usually progresses slowly but continuously.

At first, people may have trouble walking, running, or simply holding objects.

Later, speaking and swallowing become difficult.

In the advanced stages, many patients need a wheelchair and eventually a ventilator to breathe. Despite this physical decline, most patients remain mentally alert and keep their memory and intelligence.

This makes ALS even more challenging, because people are fully aware of the changes happening in their bodies. There is no cure for ALS yet, but treatments and therapies can sometimes slow down the progression and improve quality of life.

Support from family, friends, and medical professionals plays a crucial role in helping patients face the illness. II – The ALS Association and Awareness.... »
